Mothers' Union at St John's

St. John’s Mother Union meets in the Underhill Centre on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm.  Our meetings start with a short prayer service which is followed by a brief business meeting and then usually a speaker.

Throughout the year, we have a varied programme of speakers and discussions, followed by tea/coffee and biscuits with time to chat to each other and welcome new members.  We also have our annual summer meal at a nearby pub or restaurant in July.

We have various social activities and fundraisers.  In February, we hold a “Gourmet Lunch” to raise funds for the Away From It All Family Holiday, a scheme run by the Diocesan Mothers’ Union which provides a much-needed break for a family who has recently experienced stress and trauma in their family life.

In the summer months of July or August, we have a social event such as a strawberry cream tea to raise funds for Mothers’ Union Overseas projects.

In December, we have our annual evening Christmas party with guests bringing either food or toiletry items to help support the Society of St. James. We also have an afternoon carol service and tea with a retiring collection in aid of the Children’s Society.

Each month our members make a donation to our ‘Bible Fund’ which buys Bibles for every infant or adult being baptised at St John’s. This fund also received a generous boost from raffles held at our various fundraising events.

We have also recently started supporting young refugee girls and women through the Samara’s Aid Appeal by collecting toiletry items which are then taken to the quarterly Mothers’ Union Information Days. These items help make up diocesan relief boxes which are then shipped to refugee camps in Syria, Iraq and other places.

A Mother’s Union prayer service is held in the Epiphany Chapel at Winchester Cathedral on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10.30, and it has been a privilege for our branch to plan and lead this service on several occasions.

We would welcome anyone who would like to join us at any of our meetings, full details of which can be found by clicking on the PDF link below.  If you would like any further information, then please contact our leader, Sally Lloyds, .
