Mothers' Union

St. John’s Mothers' Union meets in the Underhill Centre on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Our meetings start with a short prayer service which is followed by a brief business meeting and then usually a speaker. This is followed by tea/coffee and biscuits with time to chat to each other and welcome new members.

We have various social activities and fundraisers.  In February, we hold a 'I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside' fish-and-chips lunch to raise funds for the Away From It All Family Holiday, a scheme run by the Diocesan Mothers’ Union which provides a much-needed break for a family who has recently experienced stress and trauma in their family life.

In August, we have a social event such as a strawberry cream tea to raise funds for the 'Summer of Hope' appeal supporting Mothers’ Union projects overseas. We also have our annual summer meal at a nearby restaurant in July.

In December, we hold our annual evening Christmas party with guests bringing either food or toiletry items to help support the Society of St. James. We also have an afternoon carol service and festive tea with a retiring collection in aid of the Children’s Society.

Each month, our members hold a small raffle for our ‘Bible Fund’ which buys Bibles for every infant or adult being baptised at St John’s. We also make daffodil posies for Mothering Sunday.

We have recently started supporting Mothers' Union projects in Bukedi, Uganda, by filling Smarties (R) tubes with 20-pence pieces.

A Mothers' Union prayer service is held in the Epiphany Chapel at Winchester Cathedral on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 10.30, and it is a privilege for our branch to plan and lead this service once a year, usually in October.

We would welcome anyone who would like to join us at any of our meetings. If you would like any further information, please contact our leader, Sally Lloyds.
