The Mothers' Union's annual fish-and-chips fundraising lunch for the 'Away From It All' (AFIA) programme took place on Saturday, 4th March. About 60 people enjoyed fish and chips from J. Henry's in Hedge End, as well as ice cream sundaes, traditional bread and butter and cups of tea. Sea songs were played in the background and the Underhill Centre Main Hall was festooned with bunting, all of which made a very early spring day seem like the height of British summer. 440 pounds profit was realised for the charity.

Sea Sunday is the second Sunday in July and St John's Church, in conjunction with the Mission to Seafarers, celebrated it on the 10th of July. The entire service revolved around the sea and those who work on it were remembered in prayers and hymns. A retiring collection at the end of the service brought in over 200 pounds.

There will be a coffee morning to raise funds for the Mission to Seafarers in the Underhill Centre at St John's Church on Saturday, 22nd October 2022 from 10am to 12noon. The featured speaker will be Mrs Peta Walmisley, the chairman of the Southampton committee of the Mission to Seafarers.

  • Underhill Centre 20th Anniversary 2022 (2 photos)

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Underhill Centre, a celebration lunch was held on 23rd July 2022. Catered by Carol Watson and her team, the meal was enjoyed by approximately 50 people. The Rev'd Cliff Bannister, retired, who was vicar of St John's when the Underhill Centre was opened, was also present and gave a very interesting speech detailing the trials and tribulations of getting the Centre through the perilous route of planning permission and building works.

One of the food choices was chicken - yum!

  • Carved Stone Heads (31 photos)

Amazingly there are over thirty carved stone heads in and around the church. Often they would be representations of disciples; influential local and national figures and sometimes the stonemason would do a self portrait! We can only guess at some of them now - maybe someone out there knows a little more?
